Academics solve problems, Geniuses prevent them.
Im still practising :O)
Hi techies and progees alike. My background - Analyst programmer IT has been my profession since 18 - (Im now 36) Curently im working for insurance company on AS400 - LANSA and AS400 RPG/400 language with some VB and Pocket PC work also thrown in to challenge the cortex. All development work is going to Australia in less than two years so about 25 of us will be job hunting in the near future - hence my mission to become MCAD certified. I enjoy Magic with cards in my free time as a stress releaser. And i also enjoy developing my own sites. Previoulsy in ASP now in ASP.net im studying for MCAD certification - Desktop windows apps and Web Apps using Vb.net and ASP.net. Ive been a single dad since '97 and have a supporting and great girlfriend. that about wraps it up. Mark |

Mark,
Welcome aboard! You have an extensive skillset on your list... Hopefully you don't have any trouble finding employement in the future... As for the Pocket PC development... Right on! I just picked one up myself, not too long ago... And am looking forward to messing around with J2ME... Do you develop in eVB or eC++? As for the magic... I used to have some amazing tricks under my sleeve... haven't done as much lately! David Blaine is my favourite of all magicians... Amazing stuff he does!

Pocket PC dials my home server
hi,
I use my pocket Pc to dialup my home server where I have a web site running. I can demo the site to friends - Ive used it to demo to work colleagues for solution ideas. I have a windows media database that i can access/play from my pocket PC using my Erricson mobile with Bluetooth to dial-in. its all good fun - It seems to get a few oohhs and aahhs when i demo it in the field. Ive books on eVB that Ive used for some pocket PC apps that Ive developed. Im using .Net now for its richer tool set for mobile devices Mark |

Sweet! Sounds like fun ![]() I used to have a small collection myself.. but it's either been broken apart or lost in the last move that I've done.. And that seems to be pretty neat about the pocket pc and your website! Sound's kicking... Do you like the bluetooth? I've heard some good things and bad things about it so far |

BlueTooth ot Tooth Ache ?
Im in favour of Bluetooth - Although its been critisized for being a glorified Infrared without the need to align two devices to use it.
Wireless has been around for eons - im suprised it hasnt surfaced in the IT world earlier. Wagamamas food rezzy use a wirless LAN setup and Ipaqs to for their 'at the table orders' system - real cool - and there are many more companies employing similar technology. It will mushroom... The expense will/does deter some users - and unless you have a reason to use it; its not worth the extra (at the current cost) in my view. There arnt enough users - catch 22 - you dont because noone else is so you dont ... As im a developer i made the decision to invest and study now so that Im ready to jump on the mushroom as and when it expands. Ive lost count of how many times Ive siad to myself 'I must learnt how to do that' then procede not to bother only to hear myself saying those infamous words 'I should have learned how to do that'. You're either on the treadmill or watching the treadmill ... Hhmm! Answers on a postage stamp please ... :O) Mark |

One Elton John is good enough
We have a pefect one already -
So what does this mean to us progees ? We already have pocket excel, pocket word etc so we dont need another one unless we have that killer app! - that doesnt mean we shouldnt put our ideas on paper, just be realistic and realise who we are up against. Id suggest working on web access to mobile users -although you can access web pages from your mobile, the pages arnt always tailored for the pocket pc screen 'real estate'. Also there is a market for tools for programmers. Think about it - You can run the fish shop or you can supply the fish shop. Good components for pocket PC development are in short supply - start now because wireless demand ison the increase. Soon we will see the fine line between mobile phone and pocket PC evaporate into one. The Xda is the first example of this. The latest version of Visual Studio .Net 2003 comes with mobile device templates for phone and PDA. Eat as much as you can take of this technology because it wont go away - not in our time. Heres a few more technologies to get your teeth into now ... XML, Embedded, Web services, Cryptograpthy, security, .Net .... ![]() |
