Avatars Q. & How I got here

Hey how come members cant upload theyre avatars into this BB?

I use vBulliten on a couple of my sites and I believe you can enable it.

Anyway to answer the Q on how I got to DevArticles. Well it was via DevScripts.

Been working with ASP for years & PERL but last year I got into PHP and MySQL heavy.

Bandwidth! Our bandwidth is already going though the roof with the traffic we already have. If there was a way to specify a location to a avatar, then we would concider it, but we wouldnt be able to host avatars on our own server.

I use PHPBB as well, which is opensource available at sourceforge
It allows off server linking to avatars and some other rich features.

Just something to consider... But seems that this site is pretty cool as is.

Having avatars would be nice but some people would abuse it and have some inappropriate avatars. Would be somewhat difficult to keep track. It would also make the forums slightly slower because you would have to download all the avatars. Sure, not a big problem for the broadband users but we do have some dialup users as well

Heh, if I can download over 1gb of linux distribution with a 56k, I can download some measely avatar pictures

Perhaps there's a vB mod out there somewhere which gives you that functionality.....even if there wasn't, it can't be too hard to implement.

avatars would waste too much time in the average users forum browsing...

if i want the answer to a question, i don't want to sit and wait while all the graphics load... (especially graphics which have no relation to anything other than the egotism of the poster)

i, for one, appreciate this forum not having avatars...

I somewhat agree.. I think avatars take away from the content of the forum to some degree.. Though, some avatars are ok, depending on their size... but I see why DevArticles decided not to use them

Of course you could just make a witty signiture in place of an avatar

yes, you can specify an external image in your signiture

Yup! Definately agree.

im sure you can enable external av's in vbulletin. and enforce them to a 10k 60px60px limit or something.
