Does anyone believe Alexa.com?
DevShed has a rating of 2,029, but it says it's very slow! Google has a rating of 3 and Yahoo is tops with 1. My website is (sniff) 2million. Does anyone believe all this. I worry about the acuracy of there results. It could ruin small businesses who are trying to make a buck.

My site doesn't even rank... but I'm not surprised with that...
To rephrase your question... who cares about Alexa.com? I doubt Yahoo, Google, or DevShed care where they rank... they trace their traffic locally with their own logs...

Yes I'm sure they trace there own stats, even I do, but something like alexa.com is a great way to prove to other potential clients that you are doing something right, if you have mid-way traffic levels rather than the big guys. However, if the details are inaccurate, it could possibly drive away potential clients and you lose out. Alexa seem to be taking stats very infrequently, so you could be doing really well, but ratings move after about a month or so. Talking of hits, I had a couple of 10x10 pixel squares in the milliondollarhomepage.com site that was thought up by someone in the UK (wiltshire) and that has artifically impoved my hits (artifically- due to people targeting the squares then closing and clicking another) and it was interesting to see this global mexican wave of where hits would come from Poland one week then Russia the next as news of this site reached different countries via chatrooms etc. I have had nothing for ages but this week I have had tons from Japan! That's after about 9 months since submitting the links to the page. The guy who thought it up got his $1m in the end, by selling the last few square on eBay.

That only works if your clients know what Alexa is....
I can tell you that according to FictionallyMadeUp Magazine Monthly, my site was awarded the "best of show" award for providing a prime example of quality and efficiency... Doesn't make it true =) You actually bought yourself some real estate on that page? Cool... but you're not appealing to your target audience... (I assume) As for Alexa... I still wouldn't put too much weight into it... it's fun to know, but there's better ways to prove you have a successful website. |
