More than likely youre using a usb or a firewire drive, and I'm not sure if redhat 9 has support for installing on these types of devices, you really need to contact someone who knows more about the distrobution of linux you are using, also try googling redhat 9 installations on an external drive. My guess is that it's not possible yet.. (I know you can't install windows on an external drive either, as the drivers for the usb have to be started before the partition can be mounted)

If the external drive's partitions aren't showing up in the installer, I doubt it will be possible. I'm not sure if thats a result of Redhat 9 not supporting installing to USB drives, because I have been successful installing and booting Fedora, Ubuntu and Suse on an External USB drive. One thing to check though is that u have actually set up partitions on the external drive, although its unlikely thats a problem, because in my case, all the installers showed the unpartitioned space. Also, ensure that your motherboard supports booting USB. If you can eventually install to the external drive, I can give you the necessary steps to load USB support into the kernel during boot - without which you will still not be able to boot the installed OS.
