hello
Hi all,
Just writing in to say hi. Hi! That takes care of that. As for 'about me' - I'm in Austin, TX, working in an interactive mktg firm. I don't get the chance to code anything past HTML and javascript all that often but when I do I dabble in ASP and PHP. I do get to code a lot of HTML emails (oh the excitement) and I am the firm's usability/info architect person. Lately I've been playing around with creating a company intranet and have been reading the WYSIWYG content mgmt articles here. Anyway, nice to meetcha. |

Hi Michelle,
Welcome to DevArticles... How long have you been dabbling in the wonderful world of server side scripting? ![]() What do you prefer coding with, PHP or ASP? If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! We've got a wonderful community of users willing to help out!

I've been dabblin' for about 4 years now.
I started out with ASP and then played around with PHP a little, but it's been a while for both - I got a job which emphasizes the client-facing side of things, unfortunately. But hey, a job! What about you? PHP? ASP? other? Any thoughts on the advantages/disadvantages of using PHP vs JSP? I'm working in a shop with one "real" programmer who's all about JSP and nothin' but JSP. I am constantly frustrated by the slow loading pages and complex maneuverings required to do something as simple as display the time. Am I insane?? Thanks for the welcome! I'll be around. |

Hi and welcome Michelle!
I'm a PHP programmer... Haven't dabbled in java, so I can't comment on PHP vs JSP.. Just wanted to give you a welcome ![]()

A native Texan!
![]() Michelle: From my experiences <Be them limited> I've noticed that the code that I personally have been working on in PHP with my website <which is under HEAVY construction> loads quite a bit faster than anything I ever did in Javascript.. It may be the server I'm using, but I don't know for sure.. personally I like php quite a bit more than jsp.. Tell your "real" programmer friend that they need to expand their horizons and try other things :P lol.. I would just express to them that there ARE other options than JSP... tell him the benefits you've found from PHP <or other languages you use> over jsp.. ease of use, portability, load time, etc.. ![]() |

Thanks for all the welcomes!
I'm actually not a native Texan - though I do love it here! I'm originally from southern CA. Don't want to offend any of the 'real' Texans out there. ![]() As for my java friend, I've tried to tell him about the possible advantages of other languages - but this is a BELIEVER. It's like trying to convert someone away from a cult. And, he's somewhat afraid of trying new things... so that's that. In happier news, I'm trying to set up an intranet and CMS to manage it (and possibly use in future for our clients) and I think the powers-that-be may give permission for this to happen in PHP rather than JSP, which would mean it'd be my baby! Yay. I'm looking into various off-the-shelf customizable possibilities such as postNuke, pMachine, PHPnuke and of course EditWorks - though the latter doesn't look like it contains a comprehensive enough feature set. I'm working on the requirements doc now; we'll see what comes of it. Any suggestions are welcome! Realizing I should post this question elsewhere - I'll post in the PHP area as well. ![]() |

Southern CA is cool! I love long island.. but I think my favorite part of Cali is probably Pismo Beach
![]() Well.. sounds like your java friend may need to just get over themself and yeah, I know what you mean about the converting someone away from a cult.. reprogramming.. blah.. heh.. Good luck with your project! Let us know how it goes ![]() |

As long as it brings home the bacon! Although it would be nice to be in a job that you enjoy everyday! As for me, I've been programming with PHP for just over a year. But I also develop in Java. Currently dabbling in the world of J2ME (mobile devices). As far as JSP is concerned, I can see the trouble with the loading times, but it's similar to .NET: The pages are compiled the first time around, which makes it a little slower. Every time thereafter, it's just as quick as any other language. But as any J2EE developer knows, you should always pre-compile your pages before putting them out for public use. |
