How did you first get into web design/dev?
How did you first get into web design/dev?
I'm interested in your stories. I got into it about a year ago when my web guy bailed on my project and left me with the pieces. I'd been doing graphic design since 97, but the web was NEWS to me. I took an intro course at my local community college - beginners html. Going from Freehand to Notepad was harsh at first. I'm not very technical - I "feel" my way around the code - no math abilty. My background's in fine art (so called) ![]() I picked up some tutorials along the way - I lurked around forums, asked newbie questions and got all the help I needed - and then some. I started with CSS at the outset as my developer friend had been using it on my site. Picked up some javaScript along the way and then some php (to get those forms to run). That's about my skill level. All the best - Robsta ![]() |

When I left school I was torn between graphic/industrial design, and something in computers. I decided to go for computers, as I never had to try hard to do well in computers at school, plus the money in programming is usually a lot better
.I was finishing off the last six months of my Analyst/Programming diploma, and was working at an ISP doing tech support (*shudder*) when I heard through a mate that a job was going at "one on those new web companies" (pre-dot-com boom/crash - 1997/98). I had just finshed a six month project in VB at college, and the web company was using ASP, so the transition was fairly painless, once i got my head around the whole server-side processing thing. 5 years later, I've managed to combine my love of graphic design and programming, and run my own business.... and I gotta tell ya, I've been on a high ever since. ![]() stumpy |

I come from the world of ERP consulting, on the configuration side of the software, right during that time when ERP was the new hot button in the IT market.
But I was and still am much more interested in building stuff myself. I find it very rewarding to build something that does exactly as designed. That's when I got into webdevelopment, just by doing it and learning as I went (and still go). And the rate of changes and new things make it very interesting. I always said that I will change to a new career the day I stop learning new things or better ways of doing things. That day has not arrived yet, and with the reate of changes, improvements and new cool stuff, I do not foresee that happening any time soon.

For me, it started off as something new to take on. My uncle wanted to get a website up, so I decided I'd do it for him. At the time, I had FrontPage, and quickly realized it was NOT the tool for me. I purchased Dreamweaver, and started building the site from there...
I then got into server-side programming about 2-2.5 years ago... and I haven't looked back. We're starting to get into server-side technologies at school (next week we start the new semester)... but everything up until now has been self-taught. DevArticles has been my one great resource! ![]()

my first site was a gaming site, imagine that. hehe.
After a while I got sick of not being able to update my site without editing/uploading. PHP/MySQL was my ticket to freedom ![]()

Guess what, gamingsite here to..
My Counter-Strike clan (good times, a long time ago) needed a webpage and I, who had never done anything web related, said I could do it. The result wasn't nice at all, but it woke my feelings for further web development. So I guess I can thank gaming for something good in my life Morten |

I started when someone told me I wouldn't, or couldn't do it.
They said that I couldn't have my own webserver up and running and hosting my own page... then they told me I couldn't code in PHP.. *smirks* Guess I prooved em wrong eh? ![]() |

Back in 1996 the company I worked for had a rather rudimentary noticeboard system which I converted to run as a basic intranet using an old PC as the server. As soon as the management realised what a powerful tool this was away we went and I never looked back. Since then I have retired early but still design web-sites as a paying "hobby". I only wish the technology had been around when I was starting out in IT!

it was around 1996 when enhanced music cds were gaining popularity... on the cd was an html link leading to the band's website... thanks to curiousity, i openned the html file in a text editor to find out it was actually ASCII text... after editing and finding the changes, my love for web design was born...
since then its all about challenges and the love of learning new languages... server side and client side languages... anything to complete the next project... all thanks to that one enhanced cd =) |

Hehehe... I remember those! They were the "coolest" thing when they first came out...
Long live Enhanced CDs... ![]() |
