Smile obligatory first post

Just wanted to introduce myself. I too have recently stumbled upon this site and it looks to be a great resource.

I've been designing/developing web sites professionally for the past several years. I started with Cold Fusion, but am now moving to ASP.NET. I'm a little strange in that I have an art background, but spend most of my time programming.

Just wanted to say hello,

Hiya!

Yanno, I've heard of Cold fusion, but I really don't know what it is.. is it a scripting language?

ASP.NET huh? Have you thought about maybe developing it in PHP? What made you choose ASP.NET? Anything in particular?

And welcome to the forum

Why ASP.NET? The company I work for is a Microsoft shop.

Seriously though, it works really well for the applications I build (mostly content management). I like the features it has and I've been able to do anything I've wanted to with it. There's obviously a learning curve switching from Cold Fusion, but I think in the long run it will be worth it.

I'm not opposed to any other programming languages. I'm actually reading a book about PHP/MySQL right now. In the end though, they're all tools and it's the final result that matters.

I think it's worth learning in my situation since we host most of our clients sites on our own servers. If I didn't work for a company, I might choose something else since NT/SQL Server hosting is sometimes more expensive than Linux/MySQL.

From a programming perspective, I like the features it has. The built in validation is nice, as is the way pages are compiled the first time someone requests it from the server. Every other time after that, as long as you don't change your code, the server uses the compiled copy to execute the page. It also works really well with SQL Server and stored procedures. These are just a few things I can think of off the top of my head.

Does all of .NET do that? Compile itself the first time, I mean..

I'm not sure as I've only been dealing with ASP.NET.
