PHP-Nuke vs PostNuke

Hello guyes!

Thaught that this was the elites playground, so I figured that I might ask here what is the best.

PHP Nuke vs PostNuke.

Im going to build a site for my class mates where as 120 people will have the possibility to publish news, talk in forums and such.

Now, what is the easiest to work with when it comes to simplicity in management, setup, dynamic designing and such.... ?

In advance, thanks for your replies!

Ive only actually used Xoops and PHP-Nuke, from my experience from the two, i found that xoops to be more user friendly and easier to setup.

Yeah, I've heard that PHP-Nuke can be somewhat tedious to setup...

I've had a play around with Xoops and it seemed to be pretty easy as well!

I've never used any of the above apps, but i just received the latest Windows SecurityFocus newsletter this morning, and PHPNuke is full of vulnerabilities. Note this is for the Windows version only, although, the few bugs that i did read could quite easily be in the linux version too, as they were code logic bugs (i.e the injection attacks). Here's a quick summary:

PHPNuke News Module Article.PHP SQL Injection Vulnerability
PHPNuke News Module Index.PHP SQL Injection Vulnerability
PHPNuke Viewpage.PHP File Disclosure Vulnerability
PHPNuke Forum Module Viewtopic.php SQL Injection Vulnerability
PHPNuke Forum Module Viewforum.PHP SQL Injection Vulnerability
PHPNuke Banners.PHP Banner Manager Password Disclosure

PHPNuke was a pain in the butt to setup.. My suggestion would be to write your own frontend for your main page, and use something like phpbb for your forums as it is free, or you could break down and buy a copy of vbulletin <which is the forum that this site uses> Ooor you could use something like siteworks pro

Never used postnuke or xoops.. do either of em run in a linux environment or do they need extra configuration?

PHP-Nuke is a sellout. They have to rely on ads and such to keep their site going... While PostNuke, has a community that will literally give anything they can from webspace to bandwith to whatever... PostNuke is by far better in the long run.

I wouldn't call the project sellout... Eventually, revenue from an outside source is needed... Not everything can last on free time and donations...

But apart from that, I'm not crazy about the system either!

I have used both in the past, and now I seem to try to stay away from both.

Security Reasons, If you don't mind those then both should work well for you, It's all in your taste.

Search SecurityFocus for latest issues
http://www.securityfocus.com/

PHPNuke / Matching records: 90
PostNuke / Matching records: 31

Some issues they fix, Some they don't

Thumbs up

I have used PHPNuke on my home server and it was very good but that is on my home server. I simple dragged the main folder into htdocs and there you go. Even on ADSL PHP-Nuke 6.5 takes 20-30 minutes to upload because the new version has language files for every module.

The only ever CMS/Web Portal program I have found easy to setup and good to run is PHPWebThings, it has some good modules including a built-in articles system, a links module, a forum module etc...

The only downside is it has a poor community and there aren't many downloadable modules, skins and add-ons so you're stuck with the basic package plus a shoutbox module, and some other hacks to improve the script.

http://www.phpdbform.com is the URL for PHPWebThings btw

Vince.
