I want to play around with hosting a web site from my apartment.
Assuming I have a cable internet connection with a static IP address and assuming I have just built a Linux box to function as a web server and assuming I have a Windows machine as well that I want to be able to share the Internet connection...what would my next step be? Ian |

01. Install Apache at your linux
02. Configure Virtual host in httpd.conf for your windows (optional) 03. Post your static IP address here in forum, so we can enjoy the browsing of your computer. |

80 (primary web server) 81 (secondary web server so you can have one on linux and one on windows) 20-21 (ftp) This should get you started. I do not suggest you start with setting up up ftp server on linux. I suggest you do this on windows to get an understanding of how it works first. A good free ftp server is warftp. http://www.jgaa.com/index.php?menu=154

I have my site hosted in my apartment here
It's great... cable modem... dynamic IP... registered my domain thru dotster (but all the prices are pretty much the same now) and did my dynamic dnsing through dyndns.org... I paid a flat fee and as long as I own the domain they will do my dynamic dnsing for my custom url for free |

Personally I've had crappy results with linksys routers... always had wonderful results with netgear stuffs though... that's why my entire network is netgear ![]() |

Hehehe... That's always the case... As soon as you start raving about how good a product is, it dies on you! ![]() I have a Linksys router as well (wireless), and although i haven't had any problems with it, my PCMCIA card seems to drop connections a lot... I haven't been able to determine whether or not its the card, my slot, the router, or my crappy ISP! But it's definitely one of those! ![]()
