Web 2.0 Application Rant
I think I'm addicted to Flickr, Digg, YouTube, Last.fm and Facebook.
My one complaint though, I wish each service didn't try to be like the other. Do all social network services need to offer blogging, photos, and other stuff? Not referring to sites above, but in general: Why can't a blog just be a blog... Why can't a photo-site just be a photo-site... and so on... To me, the power of RSS should give me the ability to tie all these services into one site (my homepage, for example). This is the page that I can customize to look how I want it to look. [/rant] Discuss.

I'm happy to report that I've never even heard of any but YouTube... and I'm a better man for it!
(okay, that last is debatable... ![]()

Well they are all trying to compete with each other. I don't use digg and never tried Flickr, but I do use Facebook and MySpace (best two examples for what I am about to say)
Each site wants to become a community of personal websites. Personal websites normally have a blog type of news system, Pictures of events in the persons life. Now remember all of these sites are competing with each other. of the two I use MySpace was first. It only allowed like ten pictures originally when I joined. When I joined facebook there was no blog like substance, but it allowed much more photos (don't know the actual #). Facebook then created the notes which is like a blog (though few use it like one) and When Facebook became popular MySpace upped its Picture limit.

I've been working up another rant about useless Facebook applications... but I'm not in the rant-y mood right now. I might have developed one, I still hate 'em =)

No doubt, social networking sites have gain lots of popularity in the recent times. In rder to compete with each other and to attract more and more users, they will kepp adding new features or upgrade the exsisting ones.I have registered for facebook but haven't used it.may be this week end I'll spent sometime using Facebook.

I feel threatened by how much information Facebook knows about the average user... and the fact that most users likely don't piece that together. Information is power in the social networks. Just think of the stats that they can sell to marketing companies without even giving out names/emails. "50% of single women in [some city] list [some movie] as their favourite movie AND [some band] as their favourite artist."
I'm just as guilty (and addicted) a the next guy... that scares me too. |
