Web Blogging
Hi everyone,
This is my first post! I thought I break the wind...uh um, I mean crack the egg and get active in these forums. As the subject suggests I have some questions regarding Web Blogging. One of my programming teachers brought it up in class a while ago and I thought I pursue it further. I haven't come across web blogging much while weaving the web. Maybe I have lived a sheltered life ![]() So what is web blogging? What are some good resources? And what do you guys think about it? |

Blogging is an often diary-like way of presenting information. For example, consider U.S. Presidential candidate Howard Dean's blog (blogforamerica.com, I think), where he and his campaign post little blurbs about being on the campaign trail. Also look up Lawrence Lessig and find his blog for a shining example of what these are for. You might also check out blogspot.com. Basically, it's a way for people to publish content of a pretty ephemeral nature: You wouldn't want a corporate Web site to be a blog site because the content changes frequently and is often event- or happenstance-specific. But as a way of conveying personal ideas or even topical content of a changing nature, blogs are easy and effective.

CountFLY, welcome to the forums...
I've always considered blogging to be similar to a diary... main difference is its public, not necessarily private... Blogs have been adopted by a lot of developers as a way to document their path of knowledge. I'm curious, does anyone out there keep their own blog? What types of things do you document? I assume its more in-depth than "Today i woke up and ate breakfast", but I wouldn't expect to write a full essay everyday... which is another point, how often do people update blogs? Lastly, what packages are out there to maintain blogs? Personally i've installed bBlog (coded in PHP)... wasn't 100% impressed with it... seemed complicated for the sense of being complicated... Blogs interest me, I just can't see (personally) updating them enough to make it worthwhile (for me) |

There are tons of blog packages out there, from free PHP scripts to subscription services. I think a lot of people do update blogs most every day or even multiples times a day. The content varies. It's typically not so much "Today I woke up and ate breakfast" as "Saw clips this morning from Bush's State of the Union and almost lost my breakfast and here's what's wrong with the U.S. and how I, as armchair quarterback, would propose fixing it."
Blogs have to be funny or engaging or thoughtful or else they don't get read/linked by anybody but Aunt Sally. |

CountFLY,
Welcome aboard man... Glad to see you around! As for blogging, it's all a metter of preference. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, I haven't been updating my blog (http://blog.frankmanno.com) as often as I would like. In fact, it's been quite a while since I've posted an entry. I do plan on resurrecting it shortly. As for packages, there are tons of them... From paid to free. While MadCowDzz wasn't impressed with bBlog, it's the script of choice for me. I really like the features it offers, as well as the clean interface it provides. Hit Google and search for Bloggers, and you'll come up with a few different choices. HTH! |

Thanks for the tips and info, guys.
I'll certainly check out your suggestions. I'm looking into creating a blog-like site to document my new hobby, photograhy. I would like to start documenting anything I learn, as well as any thoughts or discoveries. And photos too! |
