it's pronounced "lin-ix" (like the name Lyn)

There's a wav here: http://members.tripod.com/wwwproducts/linus.htm from the man himself.

This thread might need closing. This topic is as old as the hills and they never end nicely.

Yes, there are a few programs on linux that allow you to run windows apps.. namely WINE.

ps - i'll rename the thread to a more flame-retardent title. ")

Honestly, I'm an avid *nix supporter, but as to having apps that port over to *nix easily, that's not as common.. there are only a few programs that actually run pretty good on linux... and honestly, porting them over is quite a pain in the arse. That's the reason why I don't use my linux box as my main machine, I can't play the games I want to play on it, because it doesn't have the support... It depends on what you want to do on it, sometimes you can find programs that work just as well as they do in windows, such as the GIMP (which was ported to windows, not from windows to linux)

so what sort of things would you use a linux box for? is it noticably better for web dev or something? or used as a server?

Are there many apps you can buy for linux? eg: MS Word stylee?!

There are plenty of things to use linux for Graphics design, such as 3d imaging... There is a version of Star Office out there that is free, I believe... it's just like the MS office package... I do my web dev by hand with notepad so... not sure about that part. I use mine for graphics development with the gimp, and for a server

Discussion on topics like Linux vs Windows is always interesting with lots of opinion.

To gain deep enterprise credibility beyond Web servers and appliances, Linux will need the ongoing cooperative effort of leading system and software vendors (e.g., IBM, Compaq Computer, Hewlett-Packard, Dell Computer, Veritas Software and Computer Associates International), which must develop new cooperative relationships with the loosely organized OS community to fast-track advanced technologies to Linux.

Lets, look forward how Windows 2003 Server keeps on and how future 2.6 Linux kernel release get along with 64 bit architecture.

What our form members are thinking on SCO's claim of-

“We believe that Linux is, in material part, an unauthorized derivative of Unix.”

This high-technology soap opera is complex and Interesting.huh!
