I have just publish my first website - whoo! but I want to improve it a little to give it a little proffesionalism,
I want to add a search bar to it. I have been using Dreamweaver MX 2004 and wondered if you HAVE to have a database running in the background, or weather you can just create a tool to search the strings in website codeing only. I have created this in HTML only :- www.idn.co.uk (non-flash website) Cheers Stu |

There are both perl and PHP search engine solutions out there that don't require database functionality per se, though I believe they tend to require cron access and the ability to write index files to the server. Give google a shot.

To be completely honest I am fairly good with my web design packages, certainly macromedia,
Unfortunaltely the problem occurs when talking different languages, I can do java and html, but this is extreamly limited, I am obviously attemting to pick things up as I go along and created this website from scratch using tutorials available, is there a short cut or 'quick fix' to creating a search toolbar on this site? Thanks for your help so far. Stu |

No, there's no shortcut. You'll have to install something that'll work server-side to search your site. Typically, this means extracting a download, editing a config file, changing the templates to match your site, and running a script to index the site. Not much to it. Check out http://www.hansanderson.com/php/search/, for example. I've never used that one, but a quick google produced it. If something like this is beyond your ken, you'll just have to do without a search engine.
