What would a web based file manager do?

Move files on the server from one folder to another?
Upload files? Download files?

Wouldn't one be better using a simple FTP server?

Which FTP client are you using?

putting a dot in front of files in Unix/Linux means it's hidden...
This means some FTP clients hide those files by default.

You should be able to find an option to disable that, or find another FTP client.
