HOWTO: curved edges

Curved Edges
Just thought I'd post this here as I get asked it quite a bit. There's a million ways to do them, this is the one I'm most comfortable with.
  • create a marguee around the item you want curved
  • click the Channels palette
  • make a new channel (CTRL + N)
  • make sure your foreground/background colours are black/white (press D, then X)
  • clear the area inside the selection (DEL)
  • remove the marquee (CTRL + D)
  • now to create the curve - Filters -> Gaussian Blur
  • The amount of blur equals the radius of the curve
  • Now - this bit is a little tricky - bring up the Levels dialog box (CTRL + L)
  • Adjust the Levels so that the outter two arrows are right next to the centre arrow - the closeness also defines the amount of anti-aliasing on the curve - then click OK
  • click back to your Layers palette, and click on the layer you want the curve on
  • press CTRL + ALT + 4 to bring up the marquee (4 being the number of the alpha channel)
That's it - it might look and sound complicated at first, but after you've done it a few times, it becomes second nature

HTH
stumpy!!
