popup windows as menu

Hi. Im making a testsite, where im trying to get the menu and the main window to be in 2 different popup windows. And i need to be able to make the menulinks change the mainwindow. How do i do this ? i thought the target="_parent" would work. As it is the mainwindow that loads the menu. But apperently it doesnt.
