Simplicity vs. Eye Candy
I stumble accross nice looking simple sites with perhaps a banner and maybe 1 more graphic. (mainly hosting sites) and then I see gfx intense sites which look good but don't really highlight their content. For me simplicity wins and a basic HTML design is nicer than some 500k file that takes ages to load on 56k (I have ADSL but I am not inconsiderate of other people's equipment).

It all depends on the purpose of the site. I hang out on a lot of graphic design sites and coder sites, so, obviously, the general structure of these site will be different, because of their market and intent.
Personally tho, I have cable, and i'm a "designy" kinda person, so i prefer graphic intensive sites :P |

fair enough, graphics are nice but IMO there are too many graphic sites with the same style so it's kinda boring.
