Webpages hanging internet explorer v5.2

I am building a website using Dreamweaver MX 2004 (when it hasn't crashed). All the pages upload to the website OK, but I have noticed whilst viewing certain pages online which contain the checkboxes form that posts data to the php script page, if left for a while, hangs my version of I.E. v5.2, but not Safari browser(yes I have a MAC). Once it happens, you have to 'force quit' and re-start I.E.
Would anyone know the possible likely causes in the HTML code that would affect I.E. like that?
Dreamweaver is intellegent enough to show errors in the HTML code but it does not detect any in the pages concerned.
Thanks in advance for any tips or ideas.

OK, well it seems that I am not the only one to have experienced this before. It seems that Mac OS X users have a problem in that they are limited to v 5.2.3 in I.E. and that version has a series of bugs. The freezing problem is caused by:-
From the stylesheet
>> strong {font-weight:
>> bold;letter-spacing:0.05em;word-spacing:0.05em;color:inherit;}

More specifically, the use of the keyword 'inherit' with either (or
both) letter-spacing or word-spacing in this case.

As a result of this freezing, my I.E. refused to start and crashed before it fully started. Only by trawling around the web using Safari, I discovered the solution by deleting 3 files in the Library folder cured the problem. Namely:-
~/Library/Caches/MS Internet Cache
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconfig.plist
~/Library/Preferences/Explorer/History.html

[Note that the ~ symbol denotes your Home folder.]

I hope this is of some use to Mac users who would like to use I.E. v 5.2

From what I understand, IE for mac has many problems on its own... you might have just stumbled across one of its many bugs.

Often people are referred to Safari or Firefox instead of IE.... even Microsoft's latest "enahcements" to msn.com don't function properly on IE/Mac... many of the web's top designers are slowly ignoring IE/Mac's presence, until a future release... [if there ever will be one]

My question to you is, by deleting those files in your home directory, does your page never freeze again? or does this only work once?

Hi MadCowDzz!

Thanks for showing interest in this. Basically I experienced the IE freezing (egg-timer) when viewing my own online web pages, The only way out of that was to force-quit IE and start again and then it would work. I suppose after months of this I hit another bug and IE would crash after a few second on starting up, not even power recycling would improve matters. Only by deleting 3 files mentioned, allowed me to start it up for good..well until the next time it comes across the receipe for crashing again. IE v5.2 is the highest version for MAC's OS X at the moment unless we buy Virtual PC 7 which comes with IE v 6. The good thing out of this has been discovering FireFox which is free and great.

Fyi

Just so you all know, I believe that M$ has officially stopped production on IE for Mac OS, which means that the current version of IE for Mac is as good as it's gonna get. Time to switch if you haven't already. At the university where I work, we have been gently coaxing profs and staff over to Safari for the past 3 years now.

Also, the fix mentioned above is a fairly standard Mac OS fix referred to as trashing preferences. Throwing away the offending app's preference files is a good first step when troubleshooting things like program crashing on open, etc. Just make sure that you backup any important prefs that are stored in the preference folder, such as bookmarks, etc.
