How to make convert my desktop computer into an internet server.

How would I go about converting my old desktop computer into a web server to host my own web site? Another thing, if i make a server thats seperate from my home computer, except for it shares the same internet connection will it increase the chances of my home computer getting hacked into?

These questions are over a year old! I am surprised no-one answered this by now, and another question arises... Did "Vanstinator" complete his project, and if so, why did he not report his accomplishments here, so as to inform others... Is that not what these forums are for in the 1st place? However, if he has been waiting this long, here goes...

For your 1st question, You will have to decide on whether to upgrade your old desktop computer's Ram, Storage, Operating System( I like Linux and staying Open Source), and a few other items such as back-up method, and type of servers, there are "Primary, File, and Gateway" servers, so I recommend you start reading a little:

Appears I cannot add URL s as a new user, you will have to e-mail me for those. ( A poor choice not allowing for this)

Those will give you a start, from there research Linux and Open Source if you decide to check it out.

Secondly, any time one let's others from the "Web" past ones' Protective Nat Router, then hacking is easier, because "Nat Routers" act as a one-way valve... information can leave unrestricted, but unwanted packets can't go into the router that are not "Wanted", so to protect your "Home System network" one can install a second Nat router for super protection, and place the Home Network on that router, with the "Nat" firewall enabled. So this will effectively isolate the "Web" server (even a "Gateway" server) from the rest of the LAN Network- The Home Network.

If you want more help, I'll post it here.

E-mail me at: DOC(dot)1957(on)Hotmail-servers(dot)com-Servers (Omit "-servers", change "On" for "@", "dot" for ".", and omit Parenthesis, also do not use quotes here)
