What is needed to self host a site

We are considering hosting our own site. No reselling is planned, just a single web site. We would hope to have lots of traffic, but expect things to start slow.

We plan to use a computer with Linux server software.

What I would like to know is can we do this off DSL or a cable modem? If not, what sort of connections do we need?

We already have a domain that is being hosted by 1and1. When we shift to our own server, how do we set up the server IP address to match the domain name?

Since I have so few questions, you can probably tell that I don't know enough to know what I should ask. Any help will be appreciated.
