Alright whats up, heres my situation..
I have 3 computers networked together to share files and internet. But One of the computers is the main server so to speak for all 3 to connect to the internet. or as the network setup would put it "this computer connects directly to the internet, all other computers connect through this computer".. So with the way all is set up, I can connect to the internet, share files/printer with other comps.. My problem lies within this some how.. I think this is why I am asking for help.. anyway to the problem and what I want to do. With my current set up I can see my hosted sites from any one of the comps on my network. using either of 2 ip's for this comp. IP address: 192.168.0.1 (which I know by defualt is a networking ip it goes up from there for every machine.. like one of the others is 192.168.0.2...) and then i try another ip address given to me through the internet connection adaptor.. again on networked machines i can see the site(s).. however off network machines cant.. so what im wondering is how do I set up this comp or any comp in the future to let off network viewers see the site.. and still keep the settings I have for the network.. or similar settings for my network. Thanks, any and all help is greatly appreciated, -Soulz |

You have to give it a public IP on one of the network cards in order to let systems outside your network connect to the box.

No idea how to do that for your setup. It varies from platform to platform, configuration to configuration. If you have a firewall, presumably you could pass traffic for a given port through your outside IP to one of the boxes internally, but how to do that depends entirely on your firewall/router, etc.

public ip
If you already have a publicip then I would suggest, for testing purposes, that you consider using a DNS service though someone like DynDNS.org. The Dynamic DNS service is a free service, you'll have to register your ip every 30days, but there are clients that can do that for you. I've been doing this for 2 yrs now, its great. Next you'll have to setup your router/inetsrv to forward port# to your websrv. And fyi, most ISP's will not allow traffic on port 80, so you'll have to setup your port forwarding and your webserver to use something like port 8080. So eventualy things will work like this:
http:\\chosensrvname:8080\ = public ip >>> forward port 8080 to internal ip = ![]() if you choose not to use dyndns then you'll still have to forward port# in router/inetsrv to your websrv http:\\publicip:8080\ = forward port 8080. Hope you found this info useful. P.S. XP SP2 has more features in its firewall that might make the forwarding easier. Or consider purchasing a router like a linksys. |
