Apache .htpasswd (newbie) questions
Hello,
I've tried to protect a directory with .htaccess and .htpasswd files. They seem to be quite no-brainer solution, yet I am having some difficulties.. 1) I don't have any "shell access", so I have to create the files on my Windows machine and then FTP them to the remote Linux server. 2) Don't have access to any command line utilities to create the passwords with, the ISP forwarded me to this page: http://home.golden.net/generator/ I've created the passwords with the form in the link above, stored them to file (file is stored with EditPlus utility using Unix CR+LFs) then FTP'ed the file to the server (tried both Ascii and binary transfer). So far, I am not able to log-in with my user id and password. Any ideas of what I may be doing wrong? Also, when typing in exactly the same username and password combination to the form in the link above I get different crypted password each time. How is this possible? If the encryption is supposed to be just MD5 has of the original password? Shouldn't it be the same everytime it gets crypted? If it changes how can the http server then resolve it? BR, JoniN |
