Your system has not been modified. To complete installation at another time, please run setup again.

perhaps that package, is corrupt. check to see if it is. if so, delete and and re-download it again and let me know what happens.

hmm it's possible, that your microsoft installer package is corrupt. check the microsoft update site, it has a new release out. check it out.

Tick the "full control" box for "Everyone"

i am talking the installer package, not windows updates, they are not the same thing. the latest installer was released about 4 days ago.

I found this:- http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/wxpsimsh.html

On computers running Windows XP Professional that are not joined to a domain, ForceGuest is turned on by default. To access the traditional sharing and security tabs and manage permissions manually on these computers, go to Windows Explorer or My Computer, click the Tools menu, click Folder Options, click the View tab, and then clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box. Note that changes made manually cannot be undone by using the simple sharing UI, and although you might make what appears to be a reasonable change to permissions, the resultant permissions might not work as expected if ForceGuest is subsequently turned on.

And changed the Permission for Everyone to full control - but it still fails to install 2.0.54

Exclamation Got it to work finally !

well after trying every trick in the book to solve this error and visiting almost every forum on the web to tackle this , i was almost gonna give in for a manual configuration.
Seriously i couldnt understand what was wrong this time coz in the previous history i have installed WinXP + SP2 3 times and 2 out of 3 times Apache gave me that error. This kept me guessing what i had done to get it run for the particular one time.

Well cutting long story short , after being totally frustrated i ran thru the checklist again , i had done these by now without any results :
1) Added users "Everyone" and gave full control
2) Tried with default and updated MSI installer
3) Turned off windows Firewall and ICS
4) tried runnning the setup from my C drive (i wonder how this worked for some user , didnt work me thou )
5) Disabled AntiVirus

Then i opened up my task manager and disabled my LAN cards(s) .
Then one by one i went on ending all processes that werent required and ultimately was left with 27 processes running.

Still wont work.
Then strangely i laid my eyes on a process called NOD32kernel.exe
Well that was it !Even thou i had close the console , the kernel process was still running in the background and creating havoc.
I couldnt end that process from task manager.
So i paid a visit to the services tab in the administrative tools section and disabled the process from there .
Ran the installation wizard ! and voila it was up and running !!!

Now that i recollect my past 3 attempts the only attempt in which i had got apache to work was when i installed it b4 installing the antivirus .

So comming to the conclusion : Try disabling ur LAN network and try to end all processes that aint necessary , try to come down to about 26 processes and also make sure that your ANtivirus process is completey disabled ,which wasnt there in my case .

I hope this helps, atleast this got me out of mysery and hope it does the same for you.

I tested apache 2.2.3 , 2.0.55 and 2.0.59 and all run perfectly after doing all that i stated above.

Lightbulb Simple Sol

I had the same problem... All I did was

went to
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc
directory and opened the hosts file...

added the last line of this file as
127.0.0.1 localhost
and double clicked the installation package and it worked....
