Apache's Mod rewrite

From the tutorial here http://www.phpfreaks.com/tutorials/23/0.php , i was wondering if its a nice idea to use those Search engine friendly URL things in our php sites ?

it requires apache to have mod rewrite function. is there any way a person who is virtually hosted on a shared plan can play around with these things or do we need to contact the server admin

how many of you think its good and will use it and how many will not and why ? please

I read through that article but was not very convinced if it was a better job done than what is done by mod rewrite.

You might wanna look at the comments on this article http://www.evolt.org/article/Making...x.html#comments

ok mod rewrite gave me 500 error which means permission problem on my shared hosting account.

i personally do not want to make applications that do not work on basic linux servers.. so i'll give up on mod rewrite

but now i'll try the forcetype thing you pointed me to . if that works then its ok otherwise i'm not doing this friendly URL thing
