Does MAMP affect php and mysql?

Does anyone know if MAMP affects the PHP and MySQL configurations on a computer if they are already installed (on OS X 10.5)? I have already gotten PHP and Apache to work, but I could not get MySQL to work so I am thinking of using MAMP instead. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
