IIS Problem Unable to add Application Extension Mapping

I am unable to add an Application Extension Mapping.

I am in the properties of my 'Default Web Site' --> Home Directory Tab --> Configuration... --> Application Configuration

I click the Add button to add an extension and when I do the OK button is disabled. No matter what I do I am unable to click OK.

Are there any special permissions or options i need to give or turn on to add an extention?

Is there another way to add extensions?

I am running Windows XP Professional and IIS 5.1.

I currently have VisualStudio .NET and the .NET Framework installed.

Thanks for your time.

Lightbulb Adding Application Extension Mapping in Windows XP

Though I'm sure in the last year you've figured out this problem for yourself, this post is for those users on the web who have yet to discover the solution.

According to http://www.west-wind.com/wiki/kb.wiki?wc~XPGotchas this is a small bug in WindowsXP:

IIS 5.1 Application Script Maps
You may have noticed that the "OK" button on the ADD/EDIT APPLCATION EXTENSION MAPPING dialog stays disabled even after you have selected the executable and extension for your mapping.

This is a bug in IIS 5.1

Work around:

After selecting the executable via the Browse... button, click on the textbox itself and the path will fully expand, enabling the "OK" button so you can save the mapping.

[2003.08.23] You must also put a period in front of your script map--a requirement that didn't exist previously. Without the period, the OK button still won't be enabled. --BP

Microsoft workaround

Microsoft has published a workaround:
  1. Right-click the individual Web site or the Web Sites folder, and then click Properties.
  2. On the Home Directory tab, click Configuration.
  3. Under Application Configuration, click Add, and then click the Mappings tab.
  4. With the Add/Edit Application Extension Mapping dialog box open, click Browse to select the .exe file or the .dll file from the local path on the Web server.

Note You must type the path to a valid file in the Executable text box or the OK button remains unavailable. The easiest way to make sure that you enter a valid path is to select the file by using the Browse button.
  5. After the path appears in the Executable text box, click in the Executable text box to initialize the path.
  6. Click in the Extension space, and then type the file name extension.

Note You must enter the period (.) in front of the extension in the Extension text box, or the OK button remains unavailable.
  7. When the OK button becomes active, click OK to continue.
