Localhost is inhospitable

New PC running XP Pro...installed IIS and it appears to be running properly, but unable to access localhost from Firefox, IE 6.0 or from within the IIS snap-in. The message in the browser status bar 'Waiting for localhost' with the hour glass cursor displayed. From within the IIS snap-in, the progress bar displays a few dots and then just sits there. The Hosts file has the proper(?) entry...(127.0.0.1 localhost).

I'm able to Ping both localhost and 127.0.0.1.

Unable to create a web app from within Visual Studio...the message returned is 'Server returned an invalid or unrecognized response'

I'm signed on as a member of the administrator group..

Anyone have any suggestions...?
